Under the Franco dictatorship in Spain, thousands of babies were stolen from their mothers and given to other families. This sinister practice continued for decades after Franco’s death. Last month, a gynaecologist went on trial accused of forging birth certificates and effectively giving newborns away to other women. Eduardo Vela denies any wrongdoing. We speak with Dr Aranzazu Borrachero Mendivil, who is currently on an academic fellowship to Spain to research the issue further.
